---British Columbia---

Our fifth day of driving was our shortest mileage day--approximately 360 miles.  It was also a difficult day mentally.  It was cold, and began to sleet that morning.  We stopped for breakfast in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, and felt dejected.  Dawson Creek is the official beginning of the Alaska Highway, but at the end of April, covered in snow, it was rather anti-climactic.  After four days of driving, and four more ahead, it was hard to get worked up for Milepost 0.  Big snowflakes were falling, and the roads were starting to get covered.  We decided to make it a short day because the mountain driving begins after Fort Nelson, and we did not want to embark on that while our spirits were low and the weather was crummy.  So we took the afternoon off and rested up in Fort Nelson.  It was a sound decision.

I consider ourselves fortunate to have had only one out of eight days be a "bad" day.  In the end, even the bad day was a good day.  What's not to love about an afternoon with a six pack of beer, a hotel room, and Netflix?

The next morning, we awoke refreshed.  As we drove tentatively through the Canadian Rockies toward Yukon Territory, our fears disappeared, and we remembered how fortunate we were to be in the middle of such a beautiful drive.
